Week 8: Photo Sharing

This week we will be discussing online photo sharing. There are many sites that you can use.

Listen to week 8's podcast and read the content below. If you have questions about anything along the way, be sure to contact us. We’re happy to help!

Photo sharing websites have been around since the 90s, but it took a small startup site called Flickr to catapult the idea of “sharing” into a full blown online community. Within the past year, Flickr has become the fastest growing photo sharing site on the web and is known as one of the first websites to use keyword “tags” to create associations and connections between photos and users of the site.

For this adventure, you are asked to take a good look at Flickr and explore what this site has to offer. Find out how tags work, what groups are, and all the neat things that people and other libraries (list also here) are using Flickr for.

Assignment

There are 2 options for this assignment.

Option 1
1.Create a Free account in Flickr. You can find some digital pictures of the library to load onto the website on the m drive under the Adventures in Technology Folder (M:\Adventures in Technology). Thanks to Chris Tobias for taking all these great pictures!
2. Upload these to your Flickr account and tag at least one of the images “AIT” and mark it public.
3. See if you can find Jill or the library on Flickr and add them to your contacts. Jill's username is Hansje54 and the library's is racinepubliclibrary.
4. Create a post in your blog about your photo and experience. So go ahead, explore the site and have some Flickr photo fun!

PS: A quick word about photo posting etiquette - When posting identifiable photos of other people (especially minors) is it advisable to get the person's permission before posting their photo in a publicly accessible place like Flickr. Never upload pictures that weren't taken by you (unless you have the photographer's consent) and always give credit when you include photos taken by someone else in your blog.

Option 2
1. If you do not want to use Flickr, explore the web and find another photo sharing website. Create an account on there website.
2. Upload a picture on the website you choose.
3. Then blog about your experience (remember to mention which photo sharing website you choose!)

Finally got around to this. Being that I'm going to be uploading pictures to the Racine Public Library site. Do I need to get permission from EVERY kid in the picture?

I don't think that you need every kid's permission in a group shot, I think its more if its an individual or a close-up of someone's face that maybe we should have them sign something. I don't know for sure though. Maybe Jessica knows?
